MY CREATIVE JUICES STILL FLOW…

If you’ve followed my blog for long, you know that I have been recovering from major cancer surgery and have been battling a lack of energy since my surgery.  I was also feeling a bit out of sorts at not being the “pickle jar lady” anymore.  Who was the pickle jar lady?  She was the strong one that everyone in the house brought the jars that needed opening or asked to help move a refrigerator.

I think I might have even been a bit depressed at not being able to be myself, but that all changed today.  My niece, Amber,  is having a baby in November and she called me to ask if I’d make her baby shower invitations and announcements.  WHEW, what a relief that was for me – someone does still need me.  My creative juices kicked in and I’m feeling better all ready.  Here’s a sneak peek at the beginnings of the fronts of the shower invites.

This is my first time to link up with Scrappy Saturdays.  If you’d like to join, post something scrapbook related, grab the button, and post your link.  Try to comment on the other scrappers’ posts.  Scrappy Saturdays is hosted every other weekend by Scrappy Gifts.

PRETTY BOWLS & CRYSTAL GLASSES

I originally ran this post back on July 18th, 2008 over at 3 Sides of Crazy. I run it again here to remind myself why I named this blog what I did and that I always have something to look forward to.

When I asked Am to unload the dishwasher today, she told me how pretty a glass she was unloading was.

I told her it was a Princess House Heritage Crystal Glass and she immediately put it down and backed away from it like it was Uranium or something. I asked her what was wrong and she said she was afraid she’d break it, so she better not touch it. I laughed and said don’t worry about it, we use them every day. We even break them now and again.

Then I asked her to put the beans in the oven and she looked at the bowl and said, “You really want this pretty bowl in the oven”? Again I laughed and said yes.

So I asked her if she had ever heard of Erma Bombeck and she said no. I had to share this with her.

See many, no, most of you know me as just a fellow blogger with a positive attitude and generally friendly demeanor. What you don’t know is that I too suffer from a terrible debilitating disease that requires constant maintenance, positive attitude and a stress free life as well as a preservative free diet to stay even close to healthy. To look at me you would never know I was sick, but for that all I can say is thank you as I have worked hard to maintain that appearance and attitude, because it wasn’t always that way and it was hard work to get this healthy. I also know though how tenuous life is and how quickly it can change so for that reason I post this tribute to Erma Bombeck as a reminder to us all to burn the pink candle, use the pretty bowl and crystal glasses for everyday.

If I Had My Life To Live Over by Erma BombeckThe following was written by the late Erma Bombeck after she found out she had a fatal disease.

If I had my life to live over, I would have talked less and listened more.

I would have invited friends over to dinner even if the carpet was stained and the sofa faded.

I would have eaten the popcorn in the ‘good’ living room and worried much less about the dirt when someone wanted to light a fire in the fireplace.

I would have taken the time to listen to my grandfather ramble about his youth.

I would never have insisted the car windows be rolled up on a summer day because my hair had just been teased and sprayed.

I would have burned the pink candle sculpted like a rose before it melted in storage.

I would have sat on the lawn with my children and not worried about grass stains.

I would have cried and laughed less while watching television – and more while watching life.

I would have shared more of the responsibility carried by my husband.

I would have gone to bed when I was sick instead of pretending the earth would go into a holding pattern if I weren’t there for the day.

I would never have bought anything just because it was practical, wouldn’t show soil or was guaranteed to last a lifetime.

Instead of wishing away nine months of pregnancy, I’d have cherished every moment and realized that the wonderment growing inside me was the only chance in life to assist God in a miracle.

When my kids kissed me impetuously, I would never have said, “Later. Now go get washed up for dinner.”

There would have been more “I love you’s”.. More “I’m sorrys” …

But mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize every minute… look at it and really see it … live it…and never give it back.

From ABC’s to Graduation

So I’ve been hoping to get a graduation picture before I posted this (HINT, HINT AMBER), but will have to use this picture below as a place holder for the time being.

I recently received facebook messages and emails that still make me teary eyed (thanks Am – no really, THANK YOU, they mean a lot to me). These messages while personal and not to be publicly shared make me proud to know this young woman and be able to call her mine (in whatever term you like; niece, friend, tutee, etc…).

Amber on the left and our friend Katie on the right.

We know she will succeed in whatever path her life takes her. Congratulations Amber. We love you.

House Update ~ Chronicles of a Real Estate Nightmare ~ Amber's Room ~ Part 4

BEFORE BEFORE
Amber’s room was not part of the mold issue, it was just ugly. It originally had a drab gray paneling and the molding was not done very well. The interim before pictures below don’t look so bad with just primer, but believe me it needed painted. The previous, previous owner had built a built-in desk in the alcove area and shelves above it for his daughter Amy which was cute, but not made very well and was now 25+ years old so we tore it apart and use the alcove for the dressers instead. We never got more than the primer on the walls before it started being used as a guest room.

INTERIM BEFORE

See what I mean about the molding?
DURING

Hubby has been a real trooper getting everything done on this house since so much of it wasn’t even planned. I did the cutting in and the trim work while hubby did the rolling. We started early and finished just about dinner time after 2 coats of BEHR Oklahoma Wheat which dried very quickly.
AFTER

We do need to do the molding around the ceiling after the room has dried a bit more. We’re going to stain it to match the closet and bedroom doors. It will give great contrast to the Oklahaoma Wheat on the walls and the Innocence on the ceiling. I just love the blues and sage green against the warm walls.

Amber, your room is ready!

ONE FULL SIZED QUILT ALL FINISHED

She sewed her strips and pressed her binding.

She wants to get it really straight so she is pinning her binding to her quilt.

All pinned and ready to finish.

Slow and sure wins the race!
Tied and trimmed and ready to bind tomorrow.

ALL DONE!
And boy is she happy about that!
