WHAT I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT – BLOGMAS 2015 – day 9

Today we are listing what we CANNOT live without in winter. There are, I’m sure many many more things, but these are my top items! The one thing I am absolutely sure of is that if I have a sore throat, dry skin, cold feet or hands, cold food or catch a cold I am NOT happy.

I drink a cup of green tea every night and try to make very balanced comfort food meals to warm up my family from the inside out.  Here are a few of our favorite soups and stews links for you.

DON’T COUNT YOUR CHICKENS

I woke up feeling a bit more optimistic, even a little excited about how well things have been going.

I was able to get the first layer of grout down fairly easily on the master bedroom closet floor.  The carpet installer came and measured the bedroom and said we might even be able to have carpet by next week! I also got my desk chair put together – it’s been in the box for 5 years! I also got 5 loads of laundry done, folded and put away.  I was able to put together a “rag” tote for hubby in the garage and today was trash day so spent some time hauling things out for our awesome trash guys.  They would take it all anyway, but with the beer/soda incentive they do it with smiles on their faces.

We were able to narrow down the paint color choice – FINALLY! We started with BEHR “Bakery Box”, but hated it after it was on the walls – too institutional.  Good thing each rooms needs at least 2 coats and 3 in some areas LOL.  Next we chose SHERWIN WILLIAMS “Greek Villa” but found it too plain despite what we saw in the store so it has now become the “primer” for the master bedroom and kitchen.  We finally decided on OLYMPIC “Arctic Cotton”. It will not only match the gray tone carpet, but also the whitewashed birch tone tile for the farmhouse kitchen and bathrooms.

I helped hubby move a few heavy things in the garage and that’s where our day started taking a turn for the not so great.  You’ll notice behind hubby what appears to be daylight near the floor.

Well, it not only appears to be daylight, but IS daylight.  The siding is rotting away and in about 40% of the areas not even attached to the studs so we’re looking at some serious reinforcing and rebuild in these areas.

After helping hubby and feeling so good about so much trash being gone, I decided it was time to tackle the master bath vanity in preparation of getting the new vanity.  The water was turned off due to a leak in this bathroom quite some time ago.  What I was afraid of is what came to light – mold.  We will need to tear out every wall, find the leak, change out the plumbing and build from the ground up so to speak.

I have NO idea how long the water leaked before it was turned off.  I also have NO idea why or even where it leaked so this should be loads of fun!
DAMN I was really hoping NOT to find that BIG black spot!
As it always is with water it will take the path of least resistance.  In this case it was a crack in the floor under the linoleum.
Like water, mold will follow that same path.  In this case it also traveled up the back side of the wall paper so ALL these walls will be torn out and replaced after the leak is found and repaired.

So we decided we needed a quite “special” meal and since we still don’t have a kitchen we broke out the BBQ! We added a baked potato and salad and it was perfect!

BLOGMAS 2015 – DAY 8

I’ve updated last year’s list.

Funny story here – I had herb savers on my Amazon Christmas list for 2 years.  So last year I decided to buy myself a Christmas present and get the herb keepers so I could quit using a glass covered with a plastic bag.

So, a couple days before Christmas last year, hubby holds up one of the new herb keepers and asks, what’s this?  So I begin explaining what an herb keeper is and he’s like, “No why did you buy them?”  Long story short he was getting them for me for Christmas.  This year we are forgoing gifts and doing stockings only since this house is eating up all our disposable cash so fast!

BLOGMAS 2015 – DAY 7 – HANDMADE CHRISTMAS

HANDMADE CHRISTMAS FAVORITES

Over the years I have made everything, and I do mean everything at one time or another to create a handmade Christmas. I’ve made rolls and rolls of butcher paper into wrapping paper, cut grocery bags into handmade tags, made enough fudge, candies and cookies to feed a small country, as well as jams, jellies, soup mixes and Snowman soup!

My award winning jams were requested one year at the Church Christmas Boutique and I ended up selling for another 10 years before we moved.  Now I make just enough for gifts for neighbors and family.  I started making Snowman Soup about 20 years ago for the girl scouts and it was a HUGE seller at our gift wrap days and later for the Church Boutique.

2 years ago I missed the big Christmas Crafts Festival at the fairgrounds because of an ice storm, but last year I made it!  For the things I didn’t make myself, I at least bought from local crafters.

As for receiving, I love ANYTHING handmade.  I’m a BIG believer that it’s the thought that counts and that caring action ALWAYS touches my heart though I’m partial to cotton crocheted dishcloths, my brothers photographs, my mom’s quilted totes and ANYTHING food.

HAPPY HOMEMAKER & MENU PLAN MONDAY

This past week really flew by. These busy days are good, but also not letting me enjoy my favorite season the way we traditionally do.For now just thankful that we are healthy.  On that note all the manual labor has been really good for me.  As of yesterday I’ve lost 19 pounds.  On the bad note, I may need a new wardrobe!

WEATHER OUTSIDE
Our evenings and nights are still quite cool and crisp, but our days are sunny and warm again really helping to get a few projects done.  It is supposed to start storming at the end of the week so am hoping to get as much of the trash pile out of our hair.  Thank goodness for 2 trash days a week.

TO DO FOR THE WEEK

  • MONDAY – setting the tile in the master bedroom closet and painting the pantry.
  • TUESDAY – grocery shopping and errands, hanging clothes in closet and storing all the totes (YAY!!) then prepping more walls for paint.
  • WEDNESDAY – painting the bedroom and meeting with the insurance agent as well as hopefully meeting with the carpet people.
  • THURSDAY – 2nd coat of paint in the bedroom, pantry and 1st coat in the refrigerator area.
  • FRIDAY – Tear out wall behind laundry area where there have been sever leaks – what we find will decide how we proceed.
  • SATURDAY – Farmer’s Market if weather permits. Wrapping gifts and going to a friends Christmas party.
  • SUNDAY – still up in the air

ON MY MIND
There are a few things I’d like to mention, but need to mull over a bit more so I don’t speak from anger.  We’ll see how I feel next week.

THINGS THAT ARE MAKING ME HAPPY

  • That we’re going to be sleeping in our own bed by Christmas.  This futon is breaking my back.
  • Our granddaughter will be with us for Christmas.
  • Starting to see a tunnel.  The light at the end is still a long ways off, but now that a majority of the clean out is done things are beginning to take shape and can be more easily visualized.

FAVORITE PHOTO FROM THE CAMERA

I’ll get this recipe up soon.  It was one of the best things I have ever made in a slow cooker!

BLOGMAS 2015 – DAY 6

BLOGMAS 2014 – DAY 6 – When do you open presents?

This has changed a lot over the years.  My family traditions of a BIG Christmas eve from when I was a kid carried on through college, but as we got older and got families of our own, parents passed on, blended families (with their own traditions) were formed, etc… getting together for both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day became harder and harder to do.
Eventually for me it became more and more Christmas morning only which is fine by me.

NO 5 SECOND RULE & AN UPDATE

We no longer have a 5 second rule even for the dogs around here!  The things we have found and cleaned up have left us longing for a finished house. We have been in transition for so long here, but are finally seeing the end of the clean-up, at least in the house.  Under the kitchen sink and the master bedroom vanity are the only areas left to surprise – I hope! We were able to get a bit more of the kichen ripped out and was also able to get the wreath and Frosty up as decorations.

The foundation work that was done a couple weeks ago was a joke.  Their finish work on the inside holes left the fill 1/2 inch taller in the centers than the edges – NOT conducive to putting down a decent floor.  After we were able to get the owner of the company to see the problem last Tuesday he said someone would call later that day to set up an appointment for next week and we’ have at least 48 hours notice.  4PM yesterday I get a call saying they’d be here at 830AM today.  I told the woman 9 would be better since I have so many things to move out of their way.  They finally showed up at 10:15AM, didn’t bring what they needed to cover things again nor did they bring any new concrete mix.  They left for 2 hours to get concrete and “lunch” and finished the day at 5:45 effectively screwing up our ENTIRE day once again.  At least the new concrete is relatively flush with the foundation.  I did get a few new graffiti chances though.

Hubby notched out the shelving/shoe storage in the master closet for me so we could start the tile work.  We still need a few pieces though and will pick those up tomorrow along with the molding for the edges.  If all goes well, the clothes will be in the closet by Tuesday.

BLOGMAS 2015 – DAY 5

This is another easy topic.  The one thing I am noticing as I type each entry is that by doing this, I am remembering so many silly stories and anecdotes about aunts, uncles, cousins and such that keep bringing a smile to my face.  These memories are part of what this season is all about to me.

I’d like to say that our table looked just like the one in the picture. Well Christmas day was close, but Christmas Eve was much more casual.

One of my earlier memories is of a very warm Christmas Day, a backed up sink/garbage disposal (I don’t think we ever had a holiday in that house where the garbage disposal didn’t have an issue of some sort) and having to transport all the prepared food from my parent’s house to my granparent’s house via my  grandmother’s RED (kind of like a Christmas sleigh) Chevy station wagon (remember those?) while my uncle and I sat in the back keeping the food from toppling over.

CHRISTMAS EVEServed Buffet style since this was the night we did most of the present opening and the adults didn’t want to spend all their time in the kitchen – in later years we would have it catered (so to speak – they prepared the food, we picked it up and displayed it) from Rattler’s BBQ.  We also began to use “FINE CHINA” as hubs calls it aka as decorated paper.

  • Sandwich makings – roast beef, ham, cheeses
  • Potato Salad
  • See’s Candy boxes
  • Wintergreen ribbon candy
  • Chocolate covered cherries

CHRISTMAS DAYThis is where we dug out the REAL fine china and crystal as well as the silver.  I loved setting the table for this meal. There were always enough people that we had a KID’S table too.  I hated the kid’s table – all the good stuff was sitting at the grown-up’s table.

  • Roast Turkey
  • Daddy’s Stuffing – now recreated from scratch to taste virtually the same as my Oatnut Sourdough Herb Dressing
  • Mashed Potatoes from scratch – it was these potato peels that were one of the biggest garbage disposal problems
  • Giblet Gravy
  • Cranberry Sauce – they used Ocean Spray from a can but we now use one of these 2 homemade recipes – Cranberry or Cranberry Pomegranate Tangerine
  • Baked Ham – in later years it was always HONEYBAKED HAM and I loved making Split Pea soup with the left over bone.
  • Glazed Carrots
  • Green Bean Casserole
  • Gran’s cranberry salad – she’d make two, one for mom and aunt Liz and one for everone else.
  • Rolls and butter
  • Traditional pies like pumpkin, Cherry and as well as Cherry Pineapple Dump Cake.

When we go to my SIL’s family for Christmas (or any other big family get together)  we do Hor’deouvres style.   The family is so big that over the years we have found that if each person brings an hor’deouvres to feed 10+ people that we can make a HUGE feast.  We just serve it buffet style and mingle and play – it is ALWAYS the best time.

BLOGMAS 2015 – DAY 4

BLOGMAS 2014 – DAY 4 FAVORITE MUSIC
I’m all over the place with Christmas music – depends on the day, the occasion, my mood, what food we’re eating – just sooooooooo many factors!

I love the old standards, but I also love country Christmas and Mannheim Steamroller.  I love Christmas carolers, not that you see many these days.  I was even part of the handbell choir at church for Christmas programs.

As for favorite songs I have a few that top the list:

  • Silent Night
  • White Christmas
  • Jingle Bell Rock
  • Winter Wonderland
  • Frosty the Snowman
  • Little Drummer Boy
  • The twelve days of Christmas
  • Deck the Halls
  • Come All Ye Faithful
  • It Came upon a Midnight Clear
  • We three Kings of Orient
  • Joy to the World
  • Rudolph the Reindeer
  • Do You Hear What I Hear
  • The Most Wonderful Time of Year
  • It’s Beginning to Look a lot like Christmas
  • Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer

21 days to Christmas – SETTING A DEADLINE

We have been working REALLY hard around here.  Our goal is to have the master bedroom finished by Christmas and a fairly livable living room.  It seems like for every step forward we are taking 7 backwards!

We keep encountering things like a loaded full freezer in the garage which we finally got open yesterday.  We were prepared to drill the lock, but it turns out it wasn’t locked, just frozen shut.  We can’t quite figure it out though.  Once we got the door open it was a solid block of ice.  Hubby started chipping away at it so we could bag the food for today’s trash.  Once he broke through the ice we found defrosted smelly food.  I think every Hickory Farms package my uncle ever sent her for Christmas was inside as well as bags and bags of smoked chili peppers!

Then we keep encountering outlets that look like this.  It’s a wonder this house never burnt down! We still have no light in the sewing room, spare bedroom closet or the office and the electrician has not returned ANY calls since he was here Tuesday.  I think it is time to find a new electrician!

On a positive note I was able to get the walk in closet painted!  Hopefully if all goes well I’ll lay the tile tomorrow afternoon.  Remember the foundation guys that created such havoc?  They called late this afternoon to say they’d be here tomorrow morning to break out the concrete they did wrong and redo it.  I was told on Tuesday they would call me later that afternoon to schedule something for next week.  I told the guy I needed at least 48 hours notice to move things out of the way.  So I got 16 hours notice and spent 2 hours after dinner trying to make things accessible AGAIN! As soon as they are done I will start tiling the closet.  I’m hoping to have the clothes in the closet by Monday.  That will eliminate A LOT of totes from the living room!

You can really see the color difference in this bedroom picture.  I had just a little paint left in the can so decided to start cutting in and covering some of the larger patch areas.  The nicotine stains are the hardest to cover.

BLOGMAS 2015 – DAY 3

Today’s category is an easy one for me.  I start taping Christmas movies on Lifetime, Hallmark and INSP as soon as they air so I can watch all year long.  I’m a sucker for a happy ending and let’s face it, Christmas movies have happy endings.

So this list could be reallllllllllly long, but I will just keep it to the top 5 MUST watch each and every year movies.

It’s a toss up for me about whether White Christmas with Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney, Vera Ellen and Danny Kaye or It’s a Wonderful Life with Jimmy Stewart, Lionel Barrymore and Donna Reed is my absolute favorite, but I think I’m leaning towards It’s a Wonderful life! This year we watched it on our wonderful early Christmas present from my mom, a 50 inch SMART TV!
Which Miracle on 34th street version (the original with Natalie Wood or the remake with Richard Attenborough) is the best?  BOTH versions of course!
The Santa Clause with Tim Allen quickly became a favorite – who could resist visiting the North Pole every year?
Now Home Alone is just silly, but it never fails to make me laugh!

PEANUT BUTTER BURGERS

This really tastes better than it sounds. The peanut butter gives the burger a real nutty taste, and makes it a very juicy burger.

1-1/2 pound lean hamburger or ground sirloin
1/4 cup creamy peanut butter
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon garlic
2 Tablespoons butter, softened
Toppings of your choice

  • Mix all ingredients together until well blended.
  • Shape into patties.
  • Refrigerate patties for at least two hours. Chilling the patties helps hold their shape.
  • Grill on the BBQ.

This recipe is very flexible. Almost any spice or seasoning works well with it. DO NOT add bread crumbs, the peanut butter and the chilling will hold them together just fine.
