Weights and Measures every cook should know

Thank you Janet and Megan for resurrecting it!

  1. 3 teaspoons = 1 tablespoon
  2. 4 tablespoons = 1/4 cup
  3. 16 tablespoons = 1 cup
  4. Pinch or dash = less than 1/8 teaspoon
  5. 2 cups liquid = 1 pound
  6. 1 cup = 1/2 pint
  7. 2 pints = 1 quart
  8. 4 quarts = 1 gallon
  9. 1 cup honey = 1 1/4 cups sugar + 1/4 cup water
  10. 1 ounce unsweetened chocolate = 3 tablespoons cocoa +1 tablespoon butter
  11. 4 cups flour = 1 pound
  12. 4 tablespoons cocoa = 1 ounce
  13. 1 pound raw meat = 3 cups diced, cooked meat (I struggled with this one despite what the chart said, but Alice is right – this is ONLY an approximation!!)

A handy list. Most of them are well entrenched in my memory, but I didn’t know the honey or the diced meat. A good list to have around!

Doy! Of course 16 Tbs would equil 1 c. I don’t know why that had me stumped for so long.

BTW, that raw to cooked doesn’t always hold up. Probably close enough, though.

Great refresher or “cheat” sheet! Can’t tell you how many times I use my own sheet with some of these, when I’m trying to cut a recipe down to single serving size (especially when its a lets try and see if we like it).

Going to cut this one out – has even more than mine! Love it – Thanks
