Making Something Out of Nothing

We’re all trying to cut corners these days and I hate to waste anything so I thought this might be a fun time to encourage you

Save up 11+ ounces, making sure they are all dry. Use a grater or chopper to make small pieces. Put them in a sauce pan with 8 ounces of water and bring to a boil, stirring constantly. They should blend together like a smooth pudding. Pour into molds. This should make about 3-4 medium-sized bars. After they are set up, pop the bars out of the molds. If they don’t come out easily, stick them in the freezer for 4 hours or overnight, or until they feel dry when you touch them. Then they will pop out easily. Air dry them without their touching each other for 2-3 days.

TYPOS in church bulletins

http://www.thursday-13.com/
Thank you Janet and Megan for resurrecting it!

They’re Back! Those wonderful Church Bulletins! Thank God for church ladies with typewriters. These sentences (with all the BLOOPERS) actually appeared in church bulletins or were announced in church services.

  1. The Fasting & Prayer Conference includes snacks and meals.
  2. The sermon this morning: ‘Jesus Walks on the Water.’ The sermon tonight: ‘Searching for Jesus.’
  3. Ladies, don’t forget the rummage sale. It’s a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Bring your husbands.
  4. Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our community. Smile at someone who is hard to love. Say ‘Hell’ to someone who doesn’t care much about you.
  5. Don’t let worry kill you off – let the Church help.
  6. Miss Charlene Mason sang ‘I will not pass this way again,’ giving obvious pleasure to the congregation.
  7. For those of you who have children and don’t know it, we have a nursery downstairs.
  8. Next Thursday there will be tryouts for the choir. They need all the help they can get.
  9. Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were married on October 24 in the church. So ends a friendship that began in their school days.
  10. A bean supper will be held on Tuesday evening in the church hall. Music will follow.
  11. At the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be ‘What Is Hell?’ Come early and listen to our choir practice.
  12. Eight new choir robes are currently needed due to the addition of several new members and to the deterioration of some older ones.
  13. Scouts are saving aluminum cans, bottles and other items to be recycled. Proceeds will be used to cripple children.
  14. Please place your donation in the envelope along with the deceased person you will want remembered.
  15. The church will host an evening of fine dining, super entertainment and gracious hostility.
  16. Potluck supper Sunday at 5:00 PM – prayer and medication to follow. The ladies of the Church have cast off clothing of every kind. They may be seen in the basement on Friday afternoon..
  17. This evening at 7 PM there will be a hymn singing in the park across from the Church. Bring a blanket and come prepared to sin.
  18. Ladies Bible Study will be held Thursday morning at 10 AM. All ladies are invited to lunch in the Fellowship Hall after the B. S. is done.
  19. The pastor would appreciate it if the ladies of the Congregation would lend him their electric girdles for the pancake breakfast next Sunday.
  20. Low Self Esteem Support Group will meet Thursday at 7 PM. Please use the back door.
  21. The eighth-graders will be presenting Shakespeare’s Hamlet in the Church basement Friday at 7 PM. The congregation is invited to attend this tragedy.

Spread the Love ~ Favorite Things Swap

I’m so excited! Mamarazzi hosted her THIRD Favorite Things Swap over at Our Dandelion Wishes and my box arrived today from my swap partner Diana at Forgetfulone! I love the pastel pink wrapping, it’s so sweet.

And such a wonderful box. It turns out her favorite things are some of mine too! She sent me this awesome Sweet Pea candle from Bath & Body Works, a place I truly love, but is 2 hours away so I don’t get there often. There is also a bottle of their Clean Linen signature line bubble bath that I will use sparingly. Both of those scents are 2 of my all time favorites from Bath & Body Works. She included one of my favorite candy bars, Three Musketeers, an adorable kitten notebook, the Woman’s Day magazine that I ‘didn’t’ pick up at the checkstand the other day and this cute Martha Stewart Gumdrop scrapbook kit. I love all of it Diana. Thank You soooooooooooo much!!

Sh also included this cute poem to be sung to the theme of My Favorite Things!

Cute little gift bags
and candles for smelling.
Sweet pea’s the fragrance
that’s made for your dwelling.
Fine fluffy chocolate
a smile always brings.
These are a few
of my favorite things.

Scrapbooking photos
and making them pretty,
writing in notebooks
adorned with a kitty.
Making to-do lists
a smile always brings.
These are a few
of my favorite things.

When I’m burned out,
when I’m worn out,
when I’m feeling sad,
an hour of reading,
a hot bubble bath,
and then I don’t feel
Sooooo bad!

Diana and I have been bloggy friends for quite some time now, so I was really excited to be paired with her for this swap. Now since her box was delivered today I can disclose it’s contents too. We have so many of the same likes I was able to pick out things with her in mind that are my favorites. too Diana is a Disney ornament nut (and so am I) and I found this set of Hallmark Mickey Mouse train ornaments that I really hope she doesn’t already have. I also included my favorite pomegranite & papaya soak beads and leaves from Cuccio so she could pamper herself with a foot soak and pedicure. I also included some of my favorite scented cottage made soaps, and loofa a couple of my handmade Christmas bulbls, one of my favorite book ~ the Notebook by Nicholas Sparks which I thought would be a great summer read, a cute fat quarter of fabric and ribbon for scrapping, a spice infuser for soups and stew, a knit coaster, a photo frame, kitten kitchen magnet, a sweet smelling candle, note cards as well as a handmade sketch journal and a cute pink daily journal. I was so late coming back from my trip that I didn’t get to wrap as cute as she did.

Thought for the day

Memorial Day is actually May 30th. It was first observed on May 30th, 1868. Here in the US we have tended to “move” holidays for the convenience of 3 day weekends, so it is now ‘observed’ on the last Monday in May despite the actual date. I thought the 30th would still be a good day to share this poem.

THE VETERAN

“It is the Veteran, not the reporter,
who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the Veteran, not the preacher,
who has given us freedom of religion.

It is the Veteran, not the lawyer,
who has given us freedom for a fair trial.

It is the Veteran, not the politician,
who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the Veteran, not the campus organizer,
who has given us freedom to demonstrate.

It is the Veteran,
who saluted the flag,
who serves beneath the flag and
whose coffin is draped by the flag,
who allows the protester to burn the flag.”

Transparent Butterfly

I received this in an email and was mesmerized by it. I don’t know where or who began it, but thought I’d pass it on to share the beauty. Click on the picture to emlarge it so you can see the real beauty of this butterfly.

It comes from Central America and is found from Mexico to Panama. It is quite common in its zone, but it not easy to find because of its transparent wings, which is a natural camouflage mechanism. A butterfly with transparent wings is rare and beautiful. As delicate as finely blown glass, the presence of this rare tropical gem is used by rain forest ecologists as an indication of high habitat quality and its demise alerts them of ecological change. Rivaling the refined beauty of a stained glass window, the translucent wings of the Glasswing butterfly shimmer in the sunlight like polished panes of turquoise, orange, green, and red. All things beautiful do not have to be full of color to be noticed: in life that which is unnoticed has the most power.

It’s a picnic waiting to happen

In Hawaii, Aloha Friday is the day they take it easy and look forward to the weekend. So I thought that on Fridays I would participate and take it easy on posting, too. Therefore, I’ll ask a simple question for you to answer. Nothing that requires a lengthy response.

If you’d like to participate, just post your own question on your blog and leave your link at An Island Life. Don’t forget to visit the other participants! It’s a great way to make new bloggy friends!

National Hamburger Month

“I’d gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today.” ~ Wimpy
I recently heard on a radio station that May 28th is National Hamburger day. I thought it would be a good time to share a recipe and make burgers. So, I started researching it and the ONLY consensus I can find is that May is National Hamburger MONTH. I found some sites listed National Hamburger day as May 28th, July 28th and even December 21st. I did find a site that seems to have a very comprehensive list of holidays and seems like a great reference. Another fun site is the History of the Hamburger~ anything you ever wanted to know about burgers, but were afraid to ask. All this aside, here is my recipe for our favorite burgers.

GARLIC & HERB BURGERS
1 pound ground round
1 JUMBO egg
1 stale & dried slice of San Francisco Sourdough Bread, crumbed
1 package Good Seasons Garlic and Herb dressing mix
  • Mix all the ingredients together with your hands until well blended.
  • Form patties.
  • Chill for 24 hours before preparing.
  • Grill.
  • Add sharp cheddar cheese, mayo, sweet and sweet red red onion relish, a tomato slice and red onion slice.
  • Enjoy.

SWEET RED, RED ONION HAMBURGER RELISH

1/2 cup light brown sugar
1 tablespoons kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
1 large red onions, chopped small
2 large sweet pickles, chopped small

  • Combine the sugar, salt, cloves and vinegar in a small saucepan and bring to a boil stirring constantly until sugar dissolves.
  • Add onion and pickles and blend well.
  • Reduce heat and and cook a few minutes more until onion is translucent and tender.
  • Remove from heat and cool.
  • Keep chilled in refrigerator for up to a week.
