I love this old lamp. It’s milk glass and quite old. If you look closely there is a cameo on the bottom half. It pretty much survived the 1994 Northridge earthquake with the exception of a small broken spot on the rear of the bottom half that isn’t noticeable. There is a nightlight in the bottom half and regular bulb in the top half. It appears to have once been an oil lamp that was converted to electric.

House Update – Chronicles of a Bungled Real Estate Deal ~ Stairway ~ Part 5D ~ Anantomy of making something out of nothing at all

The stairway sounds like a simple area to do, right? WRONG!! To start with was that broken stair which wasn’t in the inspection report so we assume happened when they were moving out. Speaking of that, it evidently became too difficult for them to lift items over the banister so they took out the upper banister and when they put it back just used 3 long screws through the nice wood on the top into old lathe and plaster – yeah real secure! They also had those 2 different UGLY wall boards covering that wall with molding that made no sense in the lines or angles or at least they didn’t until we removed the UGLY wall board to find the bad patch work to the lathe and plaster. So we removed the UGLY wall boards, patched the bad area and then texture painted over it. It was still weak, so in an effort to also create a continuity we decided to use moldings to match it all up.

With the cost of wood products being what they are, we decided to see what was in the barn. They had left behind “TONS” of old wood, but we weren’t sure if any of it was usable. Fortunately much of it was which gives a better continuity to the look using the turn of the century wood and saved us a ton of money too. Since it is all going to be painted anyway, the stain colors don’t matter.

We created an anchor board to secure the top banister to the wall and make it secure once again.

We kept ‘building’ and arranging until it matched up with the old molding and covered the patch area securely.

So the next post on this stairway will be all completed and painted! At least we’ll always know this exists on the second stair down.

House UPDATE ~ Chronicles of a bungled Real Estate deal ~ Stairway ~ Part 5C

Hubby is getting ready to do the final painting of the spindles and stairs, but had to replace the broken step first. We weren’t sure what we were going to find inside, there had been so many other surprises in walls and such. The stairs were a bit of a challenge as they too were put together with ‘square’ nails. SO removing the molding pieces and edge that needed to be reused took a bit longer than planned.

Now he just needs to let the wood putty dry and then he can begin sanding the steps for painting.

So the bonus find under the step from when they put in the electrical in the closet below was a 1949 Chicago Tribune in near perfect condition.

TWD ~ Berry Surprise Cake

Laurie of Quirky Cupcake formed Tuesdays With Dorie as a form of accountability for baking at least once a week using the cookbook, Baking: From My Home to Yours by Dorie Greenspan. TWD recently celebrated it’s 1 year anniversary and is still going strong!

This week Mary Ann of Meet Me in the Kitchen chose Berry Surprise Cake on pages 273-275. Unfortunately I’m over extended this week and have to bow out. I’ll see you next week for Chocolate Gingerbread cake with Heather of Sherry Trifle . But be sure and go visit Mary Ann.

I wish I had that figure!

I love my blogging friends that I have met over the past couple of years. It takes awhile sometimes to get the feel for a new blog. Not so with Jen over at Tatertots and Jello. I felt like I was having a cup of coffee at her kitchen table and chatting from the very beginning. Jen surprised me this morning by giving me the cutest award! Thanks Jen! I would love to give it right back to you! For this award, I am supposed to list 5 things I am addicted to, and 5 blogs I am addicted to. This is hard for me (there are sooooooooooo many), but I’ll try for the top 5.

  1. Fabric – I always have a new project in my mind and when I see a piece of fabric that fits, I have to stash it away. Hey they may discontinue it before I get around to that project.
  2. Blogging – I just love the creative process. I have always kept some form of a journal, but this is better, it’s interactive with comments and constructive ideas with a sisterhood of special women and it is constantly being updated and improved.
  3. Candles – I just love candles and to have one burning most evenings! I especially love the warm colored ones with food scents (I know many of you are LYAO, but it’s true – I love the smell of apple pie and pumpkin and vanilla…
  4. Photography – I take my camera with me everywhere. There are just so many pictures to be taken! I’m always hoping for that next great shot.
  5. Cooking/Recipes – I love to cook and I just adore creating new recipes or modernizing old ones to eliminate preservative full foods.

And now on to my addictive blogs. There are so many blogs that I love to visit. but these are like when I met Jen, just chatting over coffee at the kitchen table like long lost friends.

  1. Sandra at Diary of a Stay at Home Mom ~ There is always something new to see or a special ‘trip’ to virtually take over at Sandra’s. I can’t wait to see each day what she has going on.
  2. Lucy at Lulu’s Petals ~ She always has something brewing over there and I love how she speaks her mind, it’s so refreshing.
  3. Barbara at Candy Hearts and Paper Flowers ~ She has well thought out posts on day to day life and how to have some fun too. While I know she has had so little time due to work lately and doesn’t post as often, she does post quality that I love.
  4. Diana at Forgetfulone ~ There is always something creative going on and I love how she wears her heart openly.
  5. Michelle at Scribbit a Blog About Motherhood in Alaska ~ She also has well thought out posts on day to day life and how to have some fun too. I love how she answers every single comment. I try very hard to emulate her.

There are sooooooooooo many more I’d like to list…

One World One Heart

Hosted by Lisa.
What IS ONE World-ONE Heart?
It is a blog-wide giveaway event. Get aboard the Love Train. The original idea behind this was to bring bloggers together from around the world who may never ordinarily meet. It closes the gap of the blog community and enables us to interact, discover new and wonderful people, and in the process possibly win a prize or many prizes along the way. Last years event had even more participants than the first year and many, many wonderful friend connections were made because of it……friendships that are still going strong.

My giveaway this year is for this colorful 3×3 wall hanging quilt.

This has gotten soooooooooo big. I’m adding a second & third prize again this year. Meet and greet other bloggers, many whom you’ve not met before and see all the spontaneous generosity happening with their individual give-aways!

Please leave me a comment AND a back link to your blog, so I’ll be able to notify you if you win. If you do not have a blog and would like to enter, please be sure to leave your email address in your comment. I will accept comments up to 11:59 PST February 12th. The winner will be notified February 13th.

Monday #3/2009, January 19th
Outside my Window… The clouds full of snow are still looming low and are much darker than normal. I think we’re still in for some more snow.
I am thinking… that the need to seriously concentrate on MY quality time with myself and accomplishing a specific goal each week as well as some of my UFOs (Unfinished Fabric Objects) to ease my sense of overwhelming worked well for the first week.
From the learning rooms…nothing this week.
I am thankful for…all the wonderful projects that hubby helped me accomplish this past week so that we can continue to move forward.
From the kitchen…For breakfast maple and brown sugar oatmeal with golden raisins and coffee for me, lunch will be out after bowling league and dinner will be Lemon Lime Pepper Chicken.
I am wearing…my favorite Levi’s and favorite purple henley T-shirt.
I am reading…The Potluck Catering Club by Linda Evans Shepherd and Eva Marie Everson
I am hoping…to finish painting the bathrooms this week
I am creating…a new mess while I continue sorting, reorganizing the quilting supplies trying to simplify the studio and donating as much as possible.
I am hearing…the last few percolations from the coffee pot YAY!! I need coffee!! As always!
Around the house… lots of projects that we’re finishing.

One of my favorite things…Is my quiet morning time with just my thoughts.

A Few Plans For The Rest Of The Week… Projects, projects and more projects – all indoor!!
Here is the picture thought I am sharing with you…
