The Bath tub test

This was too cute to pass on when it came across my email file.

During a visit to the mental asylum, I asked the Director how do you determine whether or not a patient should be institutionalized.

‘Well,’ said the Director, ‘we fill a bathtub with water. Then we offer a teaspoon, a teacup and a bucket to the patient and ask him or her to empty the bathtub.’
‘Oh, I understand,’ I said. ‘A normal person would use the bucket because it’s bigger than the spoon or the teacup.’

‘No.’ said the Director, ‘A normal person would pull the plug. Do you want a bed near the window?’

ARE YOU GOING TO PASS THIS ON, OR DO YOU WANT THE BED NEXT TO MINE?

Wish List Wednesday

Gotta love that Chef’s Catalog.

I just love these vintage peppermills. I make such a mess when I make pancakes and this batter dispenser would make life do much neater. I always seem to function without it, but I’d love an immersion blender for sourps, sauces and gravies. These Fresh Valley canisters are totally necessary (laugh), really they are!

Creating Artful Food

Hosted by Barbara at Candy Hearts and Paper Flowers

“Some people like to paint pictures, or do gardening, or build a boat in the basement. Other people get a tremendous pleasure out of the kitchen, because cooking is just as creative and imaginative an activity as drawing, or wood carving, or music.”

Jack the Cat & Happy Mother’s Day

This is another one of those gems from an email that I had to share:

So, we had this great 10 year old cat named Jack who just recently died. Jack was a great cat and the kids would carry him around and sit on him and nothing ever bothered him. He used to hang out and nap all day long on this mat in our bathroom. Well we have 3 kids and at the time of this story they were 4 years old, 3 years old and 1 year old. The middleone is Eli. Eli really loves chapstick. LOVES it. He kept asking to use my chapstick and then losing it. So finally one day I showed him where in the bathroom I keep my chapstick and how he could use it whenever he wanted to but he needed to put it right back in the drawer when he was done.

Last year on Mother’s Day, we were having the typical rush around and try to get ready for Church with everyone crying and carrying on. My two boys are fighting over the toy in the cereal box. I am trying to nurse my little one at the same time I am putting on my make-up. Everything is a mess and everyone has long forgotten that this is a wonderful day to honor me and the amazing job that is motherhood. We finally have the older one and the baby loaded in the car and I am looking for Eli. I have searched everywhere and I finally round the corner to go into the bathroom. And there was Eli. He was applying my chapstick very carefully to Jack’s ….. . Rear end. Eli looked right into my eyes and said “chapped.” Now if you have a cat, you know that he is right–their little butts do look pretty chapped. And, frankly, Jack didn’t seem to mind. And the only question to really ask at that point was whether it was the FIRST time Eli had done that to the cat’s behind or the hundredth.

And THAT is my favorite Mother’s Day moment ever because it reminds us that no matter how hard we try to civilize these glorious little creatures, there will always be that day when you realize they’ve been using your chapstick on the cat’s butt.

Food for Thought

I found this in the front of a very old cook book and it was something I thought I’d like to share.

Take time for…

  • Take time to work ~ it is the price of success.
  • Take time to think ~ it is the source of power.
  • Take time to play ~ it is the secret of youth.
  • Take time to read ~ it is the foundation of knowledge.
  • Take time to worship ~ it is the highway of reverence and washes the dust of the earth from our eyes.
  • Take time to help and enjoy friends ~ it is the source of happiness.
  • Take time to love ~ it is the one sacrament of life.
  • Take time to dream ~ it hitches the soul to the stars.
  • Take time to laugh ~ it is the singing that helps with life’s loads.
  • Take time to plan ~ it is the secret of being able to have time to take time for the first nine things.
