Remember these?

So we’ve been really busy these past couple of weeks and it is finally paying off. I can now show you the almost finished stairwell. (I took the pictures before hubby finished the touch up and removed the tape)

I found this old funky bookcase out in the barn and it fit into this spot as if it had been built for it specifically so it has now become a stairwell fixture. It is a great spot for all the little framed nieces and nephews.

Melt down!

Over the past few weeks we’ve been working really hard around here to get this old house up to date and all the unending projects finished. Our hopes are to have it on the market in the spring. So tonight I sat down to catch up on email and blog reading, both of which have been horribly neglected during that time. I’m sorry to say that there was some sort of melt down with my email and I have no idea who I owe emails back to! I am going to spend the next few days trying to get to all the blogs I owe visits to. Bear with me everyone.

Tuesdays With Dorie ~ Fresh Ginger & Chocolate Gingerbread

Laurie of Quirky Cupcake formed Tuesdays With Dorie as a form of accountability for baking at least once a week using the cookbook, Baking: From My Home to Yours by Dorie Greenspan.

This week Heather of Sherry Trifle chose Fresh Ginger and Chocolate Gingerbread on page 212. I couldn’t wait to try this recipe. Chocolate and gingerbread are both favorites around here. We are a bit limited on gourmet as well as a few other things ingredients wise around here, especially mid winter so I did make a few substitutions using what I had on hand and hubby still gave it 2 thumbs up!

I didn’t have any bittersweet chocolate so I used semi-sweet instead. I also used chips instead of shaved and that was a great bonus on the bites of chocolate surprise. I couldn’t get ahold of any of the chopped ginger in syrup either so opted out of it.

Menu Plan Moday

I’m following suit with Sandra over at Diary of a Stay at Home Mom and will only be posting my menus every other week. Because of the distance we lived to base we only shopped once a month so I always have the entire month’s menu made in advance, but I have only been posting it weekly for Menu Plan Monday. This will be another effort to save me on posts.

Weekday breakfasts are always either toast, scrambled eggs or cereal so I don’t post those. Working from home, lunch is “whatever” so it isn’t definitive either, but weekends are usually a brunch and I will start posting those along with the dinners.

Monday ~ Hamburger Steaks
Tuesday ~ Polynesian Chicken Pasta Salad
Wednesday ~ Taco Ring
Thursday ~ Snowbound Casserole
Friday ~ Creamy Tomato Soup
Saturday ~ Oven Poached Eggs & Pot Roast & Veggies
Sunday ~ Buttermilk Cinnamon Pancakes & Jambalaya
Monday ~ Crockpot Pork Chops & Scalloped Potatoes
Tuesday ~ Ortega Chile Bake
Wednesday ~ Split Pea Soup
Thursday ~ Beef Stroganoff
Friday ~ Meatloaf Muffins & Salad
Saturday ~ Quiche Lorraine & Pot Roast & Veggies

Mellow Yellow [3]

There’s a new photo meme in town over at Mellow Yellow Monday and it is all about the color yellow. Go check it out. LOL Yellow is one of my favorite colors when I need to see spring come faster.

I tried to catch one on yellow (hubby was driving), but no such luck!

Happy Homemaker Monday & Tempting Tuesday

Sandra at the Diary of a Stay at Home Mom has started her own Happy Homemaker Monday as a way of tying everything all together. I love it – a virtual accounting of the week. I have been wanting to simplify many of the memes I do and this is where I’m going to start. I’m anything but a simple woman, but really do need to simplify my life! So I’m combining many memes into the same post as a way to organize my week.

Favorite Blog Post of the week: I wish I had had time to do blog reading this week, but I intend to get caught up soon.

Favorite photo from last week:

Just a few dog tracks out to see if there are any new apples. Little bits of snow cling to the inside branches.
From the learning room: Nothing new this week.

Lesson learned the past few days: Don’t take anything for granted. Life is short and precious and cannot be relived.

HOME MADE CHUNKY BANANA APPLE SAUCE
4 large Apples (I like Pink Lady or Braeburns)
3 very ripe bananas

  • In a large sauce pan pour nectar over raisins and let sit while you prepare apples.
  • Wash, core, peel and chop apples.
  • Peel bananas and mash.
  • Add water to sauce pan and stir in sugar until dissolved.
  • Add cinnamon and mix well.
  • Add apples and bananas to the raisins and cook over medium heat until until apples are tender and mush easily.
  • Mush to desired consistency.
  • Remove from heat.
  • Cool and chill.
  • Can be kept in refrigerator for a week though it never lasts that long around here.
  • Also freezes well in small batches.
I look forward to seeing your home style recipes! Don’t forget to link your specific recipe post link on Mr. Linky so we can see what’s cooking at your house! Be sure to put the title of your recipe in parenthesis! It makes it so much easier for everyone to search for recipes.

House Update – Chronicles of a Nightmare – Kathryn’s Room ~ Part 6

PSUEDO BEFORE
When we first moved in it was a mess of a room, but since it was our first I don’t have many before pictures. It soon became our “closet” when we forced to rip out ours in the master bedroom because of that nasty mold from the bathroom.
Kathryn’s room was the first one we accomplished when we moved in. The paneling is original to the room, but they had the ugliest wall board (similar to the stairway) on the walls so we pulled that off, put new wallboard over the old lathe and plaster and then texture painted. When the house was a duplex from 1943-1983, this room was the upstairs kitchen. It makes such a great bedroom though and has one of the best views to the north in the whole house!

AFTER

My aunt painted the mouse above and I made the clown on the shelf. below The old books on the shelf had been my grandmas and the jar full of flower petals are from some of the flowers hubby has given me over the years.

House Update ~ Chronicles of a Bungled Real Estate Deal ~ Stairway ~ Part 5E ~ Sneak Peek

It really never occurred to us that the stairway may take an entire week to complete. With needing to primer and then paint we figured it would take 2 coats of paint. We were wrong though, it’s going to take 4 coats in some areas. The paint in those areas was soooooooooooo dull and dry, it must be decades old. So here is a sneak peek at what the new colors will look like. As you can see I haven’t been neglecting my blogging, just spending my time elsewhere this week.

Ijust love this new color, Chianti! We are painting the stairs and entry floor in stages so we can go up and down okay, but the paint dries fairly quickly so we should be done by Monday! YAY!!

Slow Cooking Thursday ~ Chicken in Italian Cream

Hosted by Sandra at Diary of a Stay at Home Mom

CHICKEN IN ITALIAN CREAM

1 1/2 pounds chicken breast tenders, cut in half
1 package Good Season Italian dressing mix
3/4 cup water
1 teaspoon Better than Bouillon Chicken Base
1 medium Vidalia onion, chopped fine
8 ounces cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup heavy cream
1/2 cup sour cream
Hot linguine

  • Combine water, Italian dressing mix and bouillon in a large Ziploc bag.
  • Add chicken tenders and onions. Marinade at least 2 hours or overnight is better. I like to prepare the chicken after dinner the night before so it can let it sit in the refrigerator overnight.
  • Place chicken in slow cooker and pour marinade over top.
  • Cook on low 3 hours.
  • Beat together the cream cheese, heavy cream and sour cream.
  • Pour over chicken and cook another hour.
  • I like to make boiled potatoes and mash them with a bit of butter only with salt and pepper. When you spoon the Italian cream over them it tastes so smooth and creamy or you can serve it over hot linguine.
