This is the infamous Thumper who shares with the deer. Isn’t he adorable? I had some wilted leaf lettuce that I put out with corn before I left for the store. I happened to have the camera with me and was able to get some pictures actually looking towards the house instead of my norm out the door shots, but then you get those too. He likes to hang out under the porch. You can see just enough room for him to scoot under that back edge near the stairs.

I’m still on vacation so this is sis-in-law’s dog, Buffy. She got her after her SWEET Daisy passed on at a very old age. Buffy started out to be a holy terror. So much so that I used to call her CUJO. Yes, that sweet looking little thing we called CUJO, PSYCHO and numerous other expletives. And no, she’s not a a miniature husky, she’s a shaved pomeranian. She has mellowed into a sweet little lover girl though.

We had a vet appointment this day and had his harness on, but wanted him to have some fun first so we decided to give Gunner his new summer toy a little early since he’s missed some serious springtime yard fun with all the snow we’ve had. At first he was hesitant, but then he caught on.

Last snow romp this past week because spring is finally here!
Gunner ran faster, but Whiskey won the stick toss.

Winter Snow time

I posted the Fall color pictures, so I thought I’d post Winter too and then Spring and Summer to depict an entire year here in the North Woods.

A snowboarder catches a gust on Teal Lake while a herd of deer check out the offerings on top of the paint river recently frozen over.

During the summer, Whiskey could stand on her hind legs and snatch a fresh apple from the lower branches of the the obviously endless apple tree (it’s February in the U.P. and I still have apples!!!!!!). Now, she just stands there and waits for them to fall or digs with her snout in the 3 feet (that’s a 4 foot fence behind her) deep snow for the ones that have recently fallen. Gunner just wants someone to play ball with him.

Real Animals?

We left the overcrowded, crime infested, language challenged suburbs of southern California to move to God’s country here in the North Woods and we really love it. There have been a few big cultural surprises though. One of the most surprising is that here where we have the entire forest’s worth of animals coming to our front door for dinner, where the animals run free and know no barriers of city vs. country that everyone loves their fake “YARD” animals! I’m a block from a major (for here anyway) HWY and yet I have deer, rabbits, skunk and such in my front yard regularly. We also have bear, elk, geese, elk, raccoon, wild turkeys and porcupines nearby. So it amazes me that in most yards you’ll find “FAKE” deer, beer, moose, etc… One local guy even has a yard full of fake geese that look so real you expect them to take flight at any minute, then again he turns his basketball court into a skating rink for the kids in the winter so he can’t be all bad. Why would you want those ugly fake deer in your yard when these beautiful ones wander in on their own?

1 step closer

Well we’re 1 step closer this week to feeling finished. As many of you know, the contractor we hired last January to seal the sun porch floor and put down a sub-floor over the slab to line up with the existing kitchen floor did us wrong. He left us with a sub floor that was 1 3/8 inches taller than the existing kitchen floor. Once we got the sealing done and the outside baseboards we were able to start on the ‘new’ sub-floor. Along with the ‘spot’ warping of a 115 year old floor ~ by the time we finished the new sub floor yesterday it was over 2 inches off. Fortunately, we have taller ceilings than today’s build and can afford to lose a couple inches. We took this opportunity to add a little extra insulation also. As you can see Whiskey is settling just fine with the new floor ~ she loves to lay where she can see 2 doors.

Now we can start on some of the little things like molding, baseboards, ceiling, real floor…
