MIND YOUR MANNERS

Have you ever noticed that many people tend to save their best manners for when there is company or are they are in the company of strangers? Have you noticed how the relationships that matter the most in their lives are manner free so to speak? Is this true of your life? Our families and close friends are some of the most important relationships and the longest and most enduring, don’t these people deserve our very best?

I recently overheard a young mother complaining that her child was not learning manners in school. Hello? Manners should be taught by parents AT HOME and begin at a very early age. There is nothing wrong with demanding our own children learn how to say please, thank you, take turns, share and be respectful of their elders in their home as well as out in the world around them. In fact, the fate of our society may well depend on it. Learning it at home first will hopefully extend into their everyday world and future business life. Children crave discipline and direction. Offer it up to them.

Some of the major categories that should be addressed while they are young are the basic please, thank you and table manners, but don’t stop there. They should be taught about privacy, and how to answer the phone and the door properly. Privacy is a two way street. Your children crave it as much as you do. As long as the lines of communication are open and there is an element of trust between you and your child this should not be an issue. Left unattended children are naturally nosy and will snoop, eavesdrop and tattletale creating even bigger issues. Learning how to greet people properly at a young age will help them to overcome shyness and social settings with strangers. Shyness is not an acceptable excuse for the lack of politeness.

No matter the fashion fad, being clean and neat shows your children to respect their own bodies and ultimately they will realize that neat, clean and polite convey a self esteem and self confidence that moves with them through their life. Giving in and letting them ‘do it’ because all the other kids are only brings their self-esteem down and creates a herd animal mentality. Now I know this makes me sound as old as my grandmother, but I do believe this whole heartedly.

All of these build to teaching older children to become young adults that learn to entertain one or more friends, date and plan events for a group. They need to learn how to make an invitation, how to RSVP and when a hostess gift is called for. They need to understand what you expect in your home so that they can not only abide by it, but learn to appreciate and live it. One day they will have their own homes and children and you would like to think that you helped give them a head start on making that life a bit easier.

In today’s world we no longer have the ‘traditional’ family with 2.2 kids and a stay at home mom. So you do need to tailor all of this around your own family life. whether it has stepparents, extended family, grown kids who have moved home, etc… It is NOT written anywhere that you must be a soccer mom gone from home 5 nights a week where no one sits down to dinner together and offers up conversation and manners. Have a family night, dinner night, game night or some such. Offer up your very best to those you love.

The question I leave you to ponder this week is:
Do you use your best manners only around company or strangers or do you use them everyday for the ones you love and deserve it most? Are you doing enough to teach your children good manners?

2 more walls

We’re getting closer, now I can see the light at the end of that tunnel really bright! The electrician finally got light to the kitchen and we were able to close up the final walls that were going to be exposed to the winter cold. We are also getting closer to the right trim color. After the 14 day cure time and maybe another coat we should be there.

Wild Turkey

Just a few months ago you’d see all the “mom” turkeys with a stream of baby turkeys trotting along behind her. Now I think it’s time for them to run for the woods. They’re starting to look like Thanksgiving dinner. There are hundreds and hundreds of wild turkeys in this north woods area. There is also an abundance of deer according to the DNR due to the recent mild winters.

Fall Color

I always dreamed of living somewhere that had 4 seasons. Now I can. This is the first time I can actually say I’ve lived through all 4 and there was a significant change each season. I have to say that Fall is one of the most beautiful. All of these pictures were taken within 5 miles of the house or in our backyard.

NICE MATTERS

So I was working on catching up on email this morning and found a blog comment from someone I didn’t know.

Well curiosity killed this cat and I had to go check out her blog to see what she liked. http://yourstilniagarafalls.typepad.com. It’s great. She touches on some great common everyday issues and I left her this comment.

“I SOOOOOOOO agree with you. Where were the parents raising some of these people in the public? Have they ever heard of common courtesy or Emily Post? I was raised to smile and acknowledge everyone politely. I also managed a restaurant hostesses and server staff for many years and ALWAYS taught them that the customer really did come first ~ DO NOT walk by someone without at least saying “hello” or “someone will be right with you”. Some of my servers used to complain about tips not being what they should be and their customers were ‘difficult’ and I always told them that their service probably wasn’t what it should have been to earn a better tip. I’d ask them what they did to make their customers meal a more enjoyable experience so they would be less ‘difficult’. The servers that took that as a challenge and changed their attitudes became better servers and made more money and they (servers AND customers) were happy. I believe in Pay it Forward, starting with a smile and acknowledgment. So today I’m acknowledging you and hoping the next person you encounter smiles and at leasts says hello.”

I repost it on my blog to remind us all that we are all in this together. Be kind and courteous to everyone. Maybe they’re grumpy, but maybe you can make it better for them by just being NICE. Despite the consensus of many today, NICE MATTERS. It will make your day and theirs and you’ll feel a whole lot better!!

Finishing Touches

The Coca-Cola sign on the left had been my dads, the antique dryer on the right had been my moms and the butcher block next to the stove was my grandma’s. The flag my mom won at a golf tournament, but thought it would look better in our house and the ceramic heart above the mirror was a wedding present from my aunt and uncle. A few of our comfort items make it seem more like home.
I know there are still things to do, okay okay lots of thing to do~some of them major, but having a few finishing touches done makes me feel like we’re getting closer.

NO EXCUSES THIS WINTER

For awhile now I’ve been promising myself I’d learn to do 2 new crafts that I’ve always wanted to learn ~ stained glass windows and knitting. Well now I have no excuse not to do one of them.I came home today to this great big box on my porch and couldn’t remember ordering anything. By the time I parked and went in to let the dogs out I forgot about it. So late this evening when I went out to feed the deer I saw it and actually brought it in.

What a great surprise to find it was a birthday present from my cousin/sister (sometimes we can’t remember which since we’re so close) Jennifer. It was filled with all this great stuff and I can’t wait to read the book and get started!! I think she needs a scarf.

That box is a 320 foot skein of yarn!!!

Turn Key House??

As you know this house was supposed to be a “turn key” deal. What none of knew was the depth of the seller’s deception. Fortunately, there is always a positive side to everything ~ IT IS ALMOST DONE!!!!! I know I keep saying that, but the more we get done the brighter I can see that light at the end of the tunnel!!

Hubby got the rest of the wainscotting mounted today and we have a primer coat of paint on just about everything. Hopefully next week we can do the second half of the sub-floor and then move the refrigerator and freezer into the respective places as well as finally move the washer up from the basement. He even got the over the refrigerator cabinet mounted.

While he was doing all that, I got the front steps and the side deck painted. Now remember this is supposed to be a “merlot” color. I used their prescribed color tinted sealer/primer (which was pepto pink by the way) and everything. It came out fire engine red!! Needless to say Home Depot, Behr and I are going to have a chat and develop the right color for the last coat and before we paint anymore of the house. At least the sealer/primer and the first coat are done on the steps.

So I went to Home Depot and it turns out that she mixed the wrong color! She gave me ‘rocking chair red’ or as we affectionately call it, ‘where’s the fire’. She was supposed to mix ’tile red’ or as we call it ‘merlot’. We were going to need another gallon to do the second coat anyway so we have the new color and the next dry day, I’ll get the final coat with the dry-lock grit mixed in to get rid of the slippery surface.

Master Bedroom ~ working towards a light at the end of the tunnel!

This area used to be an 18″ wide closet on either side of the chimney. Lots of space, but all wasted since there was only a 2′ opening. You couldn’t get to anything in the back and then we found more mold! This escalated the time to get it done and then also created even more domino effect!!!!

So, we’re building an 8′ regular walk in style closet on the right and creating a 6′ recessed nook on the left where the dressers will sit. This area will also have the wainscotting painted white for that original country look. The rest of the room is done in that God awful texture paint, so we’re planning to continue the wainscotting all the way around and do new “authentic” decorative casings on the windows as we replace and upgrade them. The inside of the closet will be lined in cedar ~ that is after the closet frame is actually built!

Progression from old to New Kitchen – almost there!

Remember this long and arduous process of taking out all the old lathe and plaster? And then getting down to the 115 year old external walls and finding little or no continuous support?

Well we got the new support studs in, some great R-19 insulation and then foam board for extra 3.3 R-value.

On top of that we placed 1/2″ MDX and then finally the wainscotting sheeting. We think this will make it much warmer this winter. We hope to get the new sub-floor in so that the floor will all be the same height finally. Thankfully the contractor that created that mess is a long past memory. After that we can get the dishwasher (YEAH!) and a ‘real’ sink base and then move the refrigerator over where it belongs, finally bring up the washer, move the freezer into its proper place and build the linen closet, hamper and storage shelves. I could have sworn I said this was almost done ~ I guess I realize there is still a lot to do and this is only 1/2 of this L~shaped kitchen!!!! Even with all there is yet to do, I keep envisioning the final product and the best news of all is that it will be MOLD free. Maybe now that we can go into winter without freezing to death, we can concentrate on getting the money back from the previous owners for their fraudulent non-disclosure.

Now this is only the primer paint, but it feels so much more like a real room again! The ceiling is going to get replaced, but for now, we’re just painting it too to get rid of the yellowing. The window will get changed out to a bay style in the spring. We’ll finish the rest of the walls as soon as the electrician is done.
